May 06, 2022 MEMORIAL BRIDGE OPEN DURING CONSTRUCTION
Memorial Bridge is open during construction. Tolls and toll process will not change during the rehabilitation project.
Construction is ongoing as the bridge undergoes a total rehabilitation, which should be complete in late 2023. Single lane closures are expected, and remote traffic lights will be in place on the bridge. The current maximum vehicle height is 13 feet, six inches and weight limit is ten tons. Motorists can expect a change in the bridge’s surface during this phase of construction, which will be similar to driving on a rural, steel, open grate bridge. During the closure, specialty equipment was used to remove concrete in limited areas of Memorial Bridge’s steel grid deck. These strips will remain exposed in areas that will be open to traffic. The exposed strips do not affect the bridge’s safety or ability to carry its current ten-ton weight limit.
If vehicle tires ride on the exposed areas, the experience will be similar to driving on a typical bridge drainage grate or rural, steel, open grate bridge. The position of the exposed strips in the travel lane will make it possible for most vehicles to avoid the open grid. In this case, the driving experience will be more like that of a typical milling and paving project.
Due to the potential change in riding surface, we encourage motorcyclists to use an alternate route.
